Kelly Cockatoo and her Aussie Mates. Tell the story of Kelly and her mates, introducing their own special songs and dances, following by learning them in more detail. (see full story at end of these notes)
Process: Kelly Cockatoo
- Introduce ascending pattern bars 9-16 (b section) played on the Recorder. Participants imitate movement going lower and higher – non locomotor- as demonstrated by Teacher.
- Play whole piece on Recorder. Participants find a group of 3, link arms and move around the room. On hearing bars 9-16 stop together to perform the movement demonstrated above.
- Repeat above. Teacher sings lyrics of A section and plays B section.
- Discuss a tuneful sound that could be made by a Cockatoo (with children perhaps listen to a recording of one) transfer this sound to B section.
- Discuss movement of a cockatoo. Eg. Smooth, co-ordinated, using different levels.
- Introduce Timpani/ Bass Xylophone parts as per arrangement.
- Explore other melodic instruments and add ostinati.
- Group divide – half play / other half sing / fly.
Fiona Frog
- All participants and teacher standing in a circle holding a Rainbow Ring
- Participants imitate movement of teacher and listen to song
- Participants continue to imitate movement and join in on ‘Brmm’.
- Continue to add patterns as participants are confident with each part.
- Divide group in half. Still holding the Rainbow Ring: one group sings song / other sign ostinato: Brum, Brum Brum, etc.
- Divide group into three. Sing as a round or all sing each ostinato.
- Explore melody on xylophones.
Wally Wombat:
- Sitting straight – moving shoulders up and down whilst saying Wally.
- Also, sitting straight move hips on chair on words Wombat.
- Explore similar movement moving around the room.
- Teacher play conga/ or two headed drum whilst participants walk around the room trying to emulate a wombat.
- Explore melody on Bass / Alto Metallophone.
- Perform with non-melodic instruments and above.
Edna Echidna
- Discuss the behaviours of the Echidna (perhaps watch a Youtube clip with children)
- Put hands one on top of the other with thumbs together to be used for flicking sand, digging holes and swimming.
- Teacher says rhyme and uses the thumbs for Slurp, digging and paddling.
- Explore different ways of doing above to make it possible. Match the words with the hands.
- Once confident explore ways to represent the actions with whole body.
- Transfer to non-melodic instruments that would copy the actions.
- Participants then play / or move.
Have fun and make it your own.
